Thank you so much Jess!

My Musing:
As my last review was about Prince of Conjurers by Laurie L. Bolanos and this was a book that surprised me in a very positive way, I decided to share with you guys a little something. So, as you know, I received a copy of Prince of Conjurers in exchange for an honest review, but this wasn't just a regular copy! This was (and still is, as it's sitting in my shelf and looking very good) an autographed copy!

But let's take a good look at it:

What a mysterious looking cover...

And oh look!

There's something on the right downer corner...

What is it?

*Zooms in*

It's a sticker!!

And a beautiful one!

Curious to see the inside?

I know I would be...

*Opens book*

Aaaaah, so pretty!

And it has my name!

And better yet...

It's written correctly!
(Everyone writes my name with double c, EVERYONE)

I love this so much *sighs*

Anyway, if you liked this musing or have one of your one to share, please leave it on the comments' section below! And happy Monday! ;)

Review: Prince of Conjurers

Prince of Conjurers
By Laurie L. Bolanos

book rate: ★ (5/5)

Publisher: Nicobar Press
Date of Publication: April 2nd 2015
Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Historical Fiction
Page Count: 434
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis provided (shortened):

What if the Phantom of the Opera changed his mind after releasing Christine and Raoul?

What if he staged his own death?

What if he intended to claim Christine as his own?

Review:

What a great great read!

Prince of Conjurers is a sequel to The Phantom of  the Opera imagined and written by Laurie L. Bolanos. I've always loved The Phantom very very much, it's one of those classics you keep close to your heart and therefore I went to The Prince of Connjurers with a few reservations... Which was completely unnecessary, as I concluded!

Laurie creates all sorts of different environments and intrigues that will keep you awake at night thinking about how this story will end. You go through so many worlds and prespectives in Prince of Conjurers that it can literally be said "This book is a journey"! A journey through the things you thought you bellieved and the things you thought you didn't. A journey of reflection but also a journey that will keep you on the edge until you reach the last page.

If you've been reading my reviews you know that a few things I really appreciate in a book (and need to be able to say "this was a good book") are:

  • Realistic characters, characters you can connect with and that have a rational way of viewing the events they participate in
  • A plot that makes sense, no loose strings and details that just don't connect with the story itself
  • An unpredictable storyline, if I'm able to guess the whole story while I'm reading the first 3 chapters then I can already said it'll be a 3-star book at the best
Prince of Conjurers did amazingly in all my "requirements" mentioned above. This was the type of book that kept me thinking "This will happen", "Ok, maybe not... Then this will happen", "Ok it didn't either...", "WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?". All in all, it was amazing and gripping and Laurie just became an auto-buy author for me.

And as if the all the above wasn't enought, I also got to see Erik (the phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, for those who don't know or don't remember) in a different light and to be able to imagine him as more than just the phantom, which was amazing for me!

To sum it all up: 100% recommend. But do read it with an open mind as you'll be signing up for much more than just The Phantom of the Opera, you'll be signing up for a full tour to what you are imagining and what I bet you weren't.

Review: The Here and Now

The Here and Now
by Ann Bashares

Book Rate:

Brief Introduction (shortened from goodreads):

This is the story of seventeen-year-old Prenna James, who immigrated to New York when she was twelve. Except Prenna didn’t come from a different country. She came from a different time—a future where a mosquito-borne illness has mutated into a pandemic, killing millions and leaving the world in ruins.

Prenna and the others who escaped to the present day must follow a strict set of rules: never reveal where they’re from, never interfere with history, and never, ever be intimate with anyone outside their community. Prenna does as she’s told, believing she can help prevent the plague that will one day ravage the earth.

But everything changes when Prenna falls for Ethan Jarves.

Review:

If you've just read the synopsis: I know it sounds amazing, and if you haven't: it sounds amazing!

But it isn't.

THE PLOT isn't. Please notice I didn't say it's bad, it is not bad, it's just not mind-blowinging fantastic. It's pretty simple and still very very gripping.

"The Here and Now" is a page-turner because of its characters and a reading-experience-changer because of its ending. Prenna is this smart teenage girl that lives in oppression but she's also a fighter. Any reader will be able to see her strenght and loyalty to her sense of justice become increasingly evident throughout the book. All the other character are insteresting in their own way but in my opinion Prenna is the most intriguing, and to be honest I think this only hit me when I finished the book because...

**BEGINING OF THE SPOILER SECTION**
Because she considered it was more important to her to lead her community than to be with the boy she had a crush on. And we never see this in most books, we never see the female protagonist walking away from a realtionship because the path they want to pursue is not compatible with having a romantic relationship. Either they always sacrifice their deepest wishes for being with their other half, or they simply don't have a biggest dream than falling in love.
And this is why I found Prenna so inspiring and refreshing, because she walked away when she thought she should.
**END OF THE SPOILER SECTION**

So all in all, 100% recommend, just don't go into it for the storyline.

Musing Mondays #12

MUSING MONDAYS is a weekly meme created and hosted by Jess from A Daily Rhythm.
Thank you so much Jess!

My Musing:
I don't think I've ever introduced you guys to my fandom-related necklace collection... So let's do it!

Firstly the Deathly Hollows necklace which I acquired in 2013 in Oporto. An old man was selling them in the street and I had been looking for one for so long that I didn't even hesitated when I saw them all dangling from a rope.

As you can see I have it exposed in my J.K.Rowling shelf next to my Harry Potter series and first two books on the Cormoran Strike triology.

Next up comes my Mockingjay necklace wich I got in Madrid just a few months ago in February of 2015. I went to a street market called "El Rastro" with my friends and I saw this tent full with fandom necklaces and I literally screamed and runned straight to it. As soon as my friends caught up with me and saw what the yelling was all about they just said "Typical Rebeca..."! So that's where I got this beauty that's currently hanging by my Hunger Games triology.

And last but not least comes my Shadowhunter's necklace which is really just the Angelic Power or Enkeli rune but in necklace form. I got it in the same place I got the Mockingjay necklace and I have it near my Mortal Instruments series.

So here you have it! I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about me and if you have funny stories or just fandom related merch that you want to share do not hesitate to leave a comment down below!

Review: Ninelands by K. E. Boyer

Ninelands
By K. E. Boyer

book rate: ★★☆ (2/5)

Published by: K. E. Boyer
Date of Publication: April 15th 2015
Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy
Page Count: 220
Source: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis provided (shortened):

One morning, twelve-year-old Jamie Collins hears strange sounds coming from the attic. Being the son of a wizard and capable of magic himself, this doesn’t seem too odd. But when he goes upstairs to explore, he discovers something totally unexpected: Minkel, a delightful, elfish creature, who intends to take him, his sister and his friends to Ninelands, a place Jamie never knew existed.

Meanwhile Zard—the future head of the Ketch clan of wizards, who are at odds with the Council of Elves—wants to get hold of Jamie for his own dark purposes. Suddenly Jamie finds himself caught in a dangerous web of magic and he must choose whether or not he will train to be a wizard and join his father in the fight against evil.

Review:

"Ninelands" is the first book in the Jamie Collins' Mystical Adventures series and I have quite a lot to say about it so keep reading!

Firstly there's something I really want to get out of the way so let me start with that. This is definetely one of my book pet peeves: characters that talk to themselves... a lot... and in an unrealistic way... It just never sounds right to me, like the character is slightly dumb... But I'm aware it may mean nothing to other readers so I want to make clear that this is just my opinion! Now, I took the liberty of picking an excerpt to better demonstrate my point of view:

"He scratched his head and glanced into the hall.
-Maybe Mom dropped something up in the attic.
But the attic door was closed.
He went to the top of the stairs to listen.
-Mom is down in the kitchen with Megan.
He went back to his room and looked up at the ceiling.
-So what made all of the noises?"

I'm hoping you got my point so lets move on to more important aspects of the book, the characters (apart from the talk-to-self thing) are adorable and I found it impossible not to love them instantly. Now take this super fun kids and put them in this amazing world called Ninelands and you have the potential  to tell a pretty fantastic story! But that's the main problem I found in this book... It just has a lot of potential and never really makes use of it. I felt lik 80% of "Ninelands" sounded more like an instruction manual about how a certain world is and how things happen there than actually about living in that world. I know this is the first book in a series and therefore I expected the rest of Jamie Collins' Mystical Adventures to be incredibly captivating and magical and mind-blowing. But "Ninelands" specifically felt more like the novela before the series than the actual first book to me.

On the other hand, I did really enjoy some ideas this book explores. And to be fair and not just quote an excerpt I dislike from "Ninelands", I will also quote my favourite:

"It all starts with a child's imagination. That is why humans are always coming up with new tools. Or new and better ways of doing things. In your world, children's imaginations grow and magically change to become creative. So that they can invent things as grownups. To imagine something and turn it into an invention for all humans to use is pure magic."

A slow-paced book introducing a possibly adictive and really fantastic series, that's how I would describe "Ninelands".

The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

We have been nominated for The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award by The Reading Habits of a Recovering Daydreamer and we are very glad she chose us. Thank you Alie!

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site
  • Put the award logo on your blog
  • Answer the 10 questions they sent you

Questions from "The Reading Habits of a Recovering Daydreamer":

1. What is the first book that made you cry?

Rebeca: Harry Potter and the Hald Blood Prince.
Isabel: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

2. Do you read non-fiction? If so, what genre(s)?

R: Dramas mostly.
I: No, not really.

3. Which author makes you wish you'd written his/her book?

R: In a good way? J. K. Rowling. In a this-book-has-so-much-wasted-potential-it-should-totally-be-rewritten? Melissa Marr.
I: Non. If the author thought that was the best way to write her story, then she has that right! I don't have the write to say that somebody's ideas are bad or her opinions wrong. I have the right to dislike the book, but not to change it.

4. What's your favorite quote?

R: "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." - Albus Dumbledore
I:  "But what if Shakespeare - and Hamlet - were asking the wrong question? What if the real question is not whether to be, but how to be?"- Gayle Forman, Just One Day

5. What's your favorite holiday? Least favorite?

R: Visiting a new city. Going to the countryside.
I: The same as Rebeca, I just don't mind the countryside, I mean, I live in the countryside xD Is not that bad people!

6. What's your favorite campy film (or TV show, book, etc.)?

R: Right now... I guess The Kill Order by James Dashner. (I really hope campy means what I think it means though hahaha)
I:

7. Which is worse: love triangles or instalove?

R: INSTALOVE! Definitely the worst for me.
I: I'm sucker for love triangles. But I'm not totally against instalove. In some books it's a bit exagerated. I find that sometimes people mistake instalove with insta atraction. But I do believe in insta atraction. People just have a tendecy to mistake both of them. You can not possible love a person you know nothing about, but you can feel atractted to a certain person the moment you see him/her. Your opinion might change when you actually meet her of course.

8. If your life (or maybe a fantasized version of your life) were made into a movie, who would play you? Who would play your significant other?

R: I'd love it if Zooey Deschanel played me and Alex Pettyfer played my significant other!
I: Miley Cyrus would be me and Zac Efron my significant other. Seriously people, I couldn't care less about celebrities. I stopped having celebrity crushes when I was 12.

9. Which composers/artists/songs would be on the soundtrack of your biopic?

R: Cold Coffee by Ed Sheeran.
I: Something by Ed Sheeran or The Head And The Heart

10. What's your favorite kind of event/performance to attend (musical, opera, ballet, football game, concert, etc.)?

R: Ballet performance! Or a concert of a band/singer I really enjoy.
I: None?! I mean I never found interest in those type of social events. I like to go just because of the ambient that surrounds people. I know it's weird, but I like to observe people in these type of things

Review: The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train
by Paula Hawkins

Book Rate:

Brief Introduction (from goodreads):

Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason’, she calls them. Their life – as she sees it – is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy.

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she’s only watched from afar. Now they’ll see; she’s much more than just the girl on the train…

Review:

I aquired this book with very high expectations (Gone Girl high) and I started reading this book with very low expectations ("this is so not like Gone Girl, total waste of time" my fellow reviewers said). I finished this book not blown away but also not disappointed, I mildly enjoyed it to be honest.

I found it immensely interesting to realise how we sound different in the minds of each person whose life crosses ours, I believe this was the main advantage of reading this 3-prespective narrative about three very (and maybe not so very) different from each other. I found some characters to be more intriguing than I initially had thought they would be but I also felt very frustrated as we got to know better the remaining charcaters.

I can't say the storyline was predictable, it wasn't. But I wasl thought it could be improved regarding certain excerpts. It's far from being a 5-stars story but it's also far from being a 1-star story. A very solid 3-stars book.

If you're feeling like reading a mistery book that will not necessary blow you away but will definitely keep you a good company, then this is it.

Please let me know what you thought if you've read it!

P.S.: Do not go into it thinking it's like Gone Girl, IT'S NOT.

Review: Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare (non-spoiler)

Clokwork Princess
by Cassandra Clare

This is a non-spoiler review. I will not go into detail about the story, I just want to tell you my feelings about it.

The Infernal Devices is about a girl named Tessa. After her aunt death , she decides to move to London and start over alongside her older brother, who recently moved there. As soon as she arrives her life takes an unexpected turn and, before she knows it, she is evolved in a society where Shadowhunters, werewolves, vampires and warlocks are not only real but she may be one of them. What is she? Nobody knows but she's different.

Where shall I start? How about how good this series is?!?!?!? I loved every single aspect of it! I had already read The Mortal Instruments and I love it as well. I can't say which series I loved the most because they cannot be separated. They are connected in a way that will make you beg for more. Lady Midnight was already one of my most anticipated releases but after reading clockwork princess I can't wait any longer. Please Cassandra Clare, hurry up!

This book made me feel so many things that I'm having trouble writing it down, I can't form a coherent though! It made me laugh, and it made me cry. I actually knew what was going to happen because I spoiled myself by reading City of Heavenly Fire. Even after all the warnings I still read it. I loved it anyway. It was a brilliant conclusion for this trilogy and it connected perfectly with The Mortal Instruments.

I recommend this books to everybody. Cassandra Clare's writing is beautiful and so are her stories. I'd read anything by her.

Review: Hopeless

Hopeless
by Colleen Hoover

book rate:

Brief Introduction (from goodreads):

Sky Davis is starting sixth form having always been home-schooled, and wants to keep a low profile. But then she runs into Dean Holder - messy brown hair, smouldering blue eyes, and a temper straight out of Fight Club, someone who Sky is determined to avoid.

There is something about Holder that sparks memories of Sky's troubled past, those which she would rather stay buried. Little does she know that the mysterious Dean Holder is harbouring secrets of his own . . .

When the truth unravels, Sky must piece her life back together and learn to trust again. Only by facing the revelations together can the two of them begin to heal their emotional scars and find a way to live without boundaries.

Review:

I bought "Hopeless" because I had heard a lot about Colleen Hoover's "Slammed" (a book I'm really looking forward to read!) and when I saw this on a shelf at my local bookshop I didn't even think twice. Only when I got home did I even remember to read the sinopsis and check if this book was a stand alone or a first in a series! At the time I thought I had made my first impulse buy and that it had been a really bad one but guess what? I had never been so wrong.

"Hopeless" exceeded my expectations not only plot-wise but also in the deepness of the characters. Initially I thought Sky and Holder would be the typical borken kids that find each other and somehow mend all the broken pieces of their pasts in order to be happily in love for the rest of their lives. So not true. Sooo not true!

Sky is such a complex character, she feels so much and so little at the same time. And she is not broken by her past because she has no idea what her past is. And Holder can be quite a jerk sometimes, but aren't real life teenage boys like that too? These characters are so realistic it hurts! Their reactions are very relatable and as this is a story during which Sky and Holder learn their real stories too we come across a lot of different and strong reactions.

It's not a life changing book (at least not for me), but it will stick to your thoughts for a pretty long while. I can't tell you much about the story or else I would ruin it for you, but trust me when I say it's a pretty intense book! Do recommend and am definetily looking forward to reading Losing Hope.

Brief Introduction To The Series (from goodreads):

She is only nineteen. She is his new stepfather’s daughter. She is still naïve and innocent due to spending the last three years taking care of her sick mother. But for 24 year old Rush Finlay, she is the only thing that has ever been off limits. His famous father’s guilt money, his mother’s desperation to win his love, and his charm are the three reasons he has never been told no.

Blaire Wynn left her small farmhouse in Alabama, after her mother passed away, to move in with her father and his new wife in their sprawling beach house along the Florida gulf coast. She isn’t prepared for the lifestyle change and she knows she’ll never fit into this world. Then there is her sexy stepbrother who her father leaves her with for the summer while he runs off to Paris with his wife. Rush is as spoiled as he is gorgeous. He is also getting under her skin. She knows he is anything but good for her and that he’ll never be faithful to anyone. He is jaded and has secrets Blaire knows she may never uncover but even knowing all of that…

Blaire just may have fallen too far.

Review:

This series has a pretty good start. "Fallen Too Far" presents us with a young and innocent-looking Blair who is actually, or so I thought, a very strong, determined and hard-working girl. Actually, Blair's character was the main reason why I even finished this series.

To be honest the more I read after the first book, the more I thought "this is terrible, I should just put it down". And I should have. From the second book on Blair's realtionship with Rush becomes an obsession for both of them and they stop being independent beings even! Which honestly is something that really makes me uncomfortable about romantic relationships... The other characters have almost no importance for the story whatsoever and everything starts being related to Blair+Rush love and sex. I thought this books became more erotic than that cutsy romantic thing I was expecting.

Long story short (as really I don't have much to say other than this about this series), this story was 100% not for me. The first book is worth reading, from then on I do not recommend.

Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave
by Rick Yancey

Synopsis:
THE 1ST WAVE
Took out half a million people
THE 2ND WAVE
Put that number to shame
THE 3RD WAVE
Lasted a little longer,
Twelve weeks...four billion dead
IN THE 4TH WAVE,
You can't trust that people are still people.
AND THE 5TH WAVE?
No one knows,.
But it's coming.

Before starting this review I want to thank Rebeca for giving this book to me. You're the best ❤

Review:

If that synopsis didn't made you buy the book immediately I don't know what you're doing with your life, seriously, once I read that I knew the book had to be read as soon as possible! It didn't disappoint! I loved this book and I'm looking forward to read the following books in this series!

I'm not going into full detail about this book because I think it's best to go into it without knowing to much about the plot, and the book it self. The only thing I knew about it was that there were aliens. It was probably why I loved the book so much. I was surprised and confused in the most pleasant why you can imagine!

All the characters are full of surprises, you think you know what they are about to do, and then they do the opposite, it was unnerving most the most the times, but in the good way.

Also the plot is full of twists and turns, you never really know what really is happening. Every time you finally understand what is going on, you read something else and everything changes! I was constantly trying to make sense of all that but I couldn't, I was constantly being taken aback.

Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity.

And if this is humanity's last war, then I am the battlefield.

I highly recommend The 5th Wave, it was the best book I've read so far this year! It was everything I was hoping for and more. If you haven't read the book, go buy it, read it, and then comment down below telling me what you thought about it!

Feature and Follow #14

Feature and Follow Friday is a meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.

Question of the Week: Do you own any doubles of your books? What led to getting that second...or third or fourth...copy?

I don't own doubles of my books because. However, I really want to buy the physical book of some books I already own in e-book formant. Some of those I bought because they were a lot cheaper and because I didn't think I'd love them as much as I did. Now I want to add them to my collection, but I'd rather save my money and buy new books that I haven't read before.

What about you? Do you usually buy doubles? Leave your answer on the comment section down below!
